National Trails Day Hike-a-Thon

Help SBFC raise $10,000 on National Trails Day during our first-ever Hike-a-Thon! Make a goal of hiking as many miles as you'd like, then ask friends/family to sponsor your hike by donating a dollar amount per mile or by making a flat donation.

You can report your miles hiked at the end of the day (we're using the honor system, or you're welcome to join us on Strava!) and your pledges will be collected.

The Hike-a-Thon will take place the weekend of May 31-June 2, which is also National Trails Day (Saturday, June 1st). You choose how and when to complete your hiking/running/crawling challenge!

All funds raised will support SBFC’s inaugural season of Youth Wilderness Expeditions!

  • SBFC is raising funds to get kids into the Wilderness! This summer we are debuting a new youth wilderness expedition program, with the first projects starting in July. We are sourcing all the gear, tools, food, transportation, and leadership needed to bring young people on immersive muti-day wilderness trips in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. Professional SBFC crew and Wilderness Ranger Fellows will lead youth ages 13-18 on backpacking trips that are equal parts stewardship, education, and recreation.

The goal is simple: to give kids an opportunity to fall in love with wild places for life.

SBFC’s Youth Program Director is visiting every middle and high school in the communities closely surrounding the Selway (Ravalli County, Idaho County).

In future years, we will expand recruitment efforts to circumnavigate the Selway and the Frank (Salmon, Challis, Boise, McCall, Moscow, Missoula, etc.) and the number of programs (and spaces for additional youth participants) will grow.

  • Absolutely! Feel free to create a team or family/friend group to hike and raise pledges/funds together or separately.

  • No! Participating in the Hike-a-Thon is totally free! If you would like to support the event, you could pledge towards yourself, commit to matching your donors’ pledges, or support another participant!

About the Youth Wilderness Program:

The SBFC Youth Wilderness Program is a new opportunity for us to bring youth into Wilderness. We are dedicated to cultivating in youth an appreciation for Wilderness, public land, and public service; fostering the next generation of Wilderness stewards. Through hands-on conservation work, experiential learning, and plenty of recreation, youth will engage the land and learn the true meaning of Wilderness.

Our immersive, multi-day expeditions will challenge youth, teach them how to travel, live, and work safely in the backcountry, and expose them to possible careers in stewardship and conservation. Our program removes the barriers for youth to access and enjoy Wilderness by providing the gear, food, expertise, and leadership necessary to experience the backcountry safely, at no cost to participants.

This year, the program is piloting with six multi-day expeditions in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness for middle and high school students. In 2024, are specifically recruiting from communities surrounding the wilderness (Ravalli County in Montana and Idaho County in Idaho).

In future years, we will expand recruitment efforts to circumnavigate the Selway and the Frank (Salmon, Challis, Boise, McCall, Moscow, Missoula, etc.) and the number of programs (and spaces for additional youth participants) will grow.
