SBFC Wilderness Signs
Designed to feel like you are standing at the edge of a Wilderness boundary, this sign pays tribute to the wild places we love and makes the perfect memento of a trip to the Selway-Bitterroot or Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness.

By design, wilderness signs are simple and their natural beauty is shaped by nature. Signs produced by Trailhead DesignWorks, like wilderness itself, have minimal disturbance by human hands. The U.S. Forest Service standard for wilderness sign design, construction, and finishing is closely followed. We use 1.5” thick Western Red Cedar, which naturally resists insects and decay, is strong yet lightweight, and is not prone to warping and shrinking. The surface is slightly distressed to bring out the rich wood grain texture. Finishing is limited to a coat of natural linseed oil and turpentine.

Trailhead DesignWorks was founded in 2020 by John Twa shortly after a backpacking trip to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The wilderness signs in “The Frank” reminded him of the redwood and cedar signs he constructed in his parents' sign shop while growing up.
John grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan's woods, lakes, and rivers, forming a deep appreciation for wild places. After receiving an engineering degree from Michigan Tech University, he headed west, eventually settling with his wife in Boise. When not making wood signs, he can be found backpacking, mountain biking, back country skiing, and riding the electric motorcycle he designed and built himself.
