Hum Lake
Dates: August 23-27, 2026
Location: Payette National Forest
Trailhead: Duck Lake/Hum Lake Trailhead
Basecamp: Hum Lake (a 4-mile hike in)
Difficulty: Moderate-Strenuous backpacking project
details:
Immerse yourself in the rugged landscape of the Payette National Forest! This four-day adventure, led by SBFC volunteers, is based out of the Hum Lake basin. This high-elevation lake is within a recommended wilderness area.
Our hike begins at the Duck Lake Trailhead and follows the Twenty Mile Trail #085 before climbing a steep, 1,200-foot ascent on the #082 trail before descending 1000’ en route to Hum Lake. Over the course of four miles of switchbacks, we’ll reach our basecamp at 6,800feet, where we’ll be rewarded with ample camping in an alpine valley. From the lake, we will work in both directions to maintain the trail corridor. The work will entail clearing fallen logs, cleaning drainage structures, and improving trail tread.
This is a moderate-strenuous project. This is a backpacking project with no stock support provided.
Unlike our wilderness hitches, meals are not provided by SBFC for this project. Instead, registered volunteers can request a $32/day per diem reimbursement. A simple reimbursement form will be provided.
