Cancelled Sixteen-to-One Bridge Construction

SBFC is thrilled to offer a long-weekend volunteer opportunity on the scenic Boise National Forest! Note: these were the project dates for the Renwyck/Antelope #141/138 trail loop project, but we have a new exciting opportunity to offer!

Help us construct nail-laminated timber (NLT) bridges along the Sixteen-to-One Trail (Trail #104), replacing those destroyed by the 2024 Goat Fire. These are short-span structures (20 feet or less) built from lumber planks joined with spikes or nails. We will begin by demolishing the burned remains of bridge boards using crowbars. From there, we’ll construct abutments and install 2x10 decking and running planks. We may also complete trail maintenance tasks including brushing vegetation and clearing downed trees.

This is a moderate project with car camping along one of Idaho’s most famous stretches of river, the South Fork of the Salmon. This project is perfect for those who enjoy backcountry work without the long backpacking miles, and who want to learn more about constructing trail bridges.  

Unlike our wilderness hitches, meals are not provided by SBFC for this project. Instead, registered volunteers can request a $32/day per diem reimbursement. A simple reimbursement form will be provided.
