Dates: July 29- August 5, 2026

Location: Salmon-Challis National Forest, Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness

Trailhead: Crags Campground

Basecamp: Welcome Lake (7-mile hike in)

Difficulty: Strenuous

details:

A bucket-list destination, the Bighorn Crags are a stunning, jagged series of peaks surrounding more than a dozen crystal-clear alpine lakes. Located in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, this is wild, high-elevation country characterized by its rugged beauty, abundant wildlife, and an extensive network of trails.

Working along the Reflection/Welcome Lakes Trail (#6147), our crew will rehabilitate high-use wilderness routes to help protect fragile alpine ecosystems. The work will include corridor clearing as well as tread and drainage repairs. We may also remove trash and naturalize fire rings.

This is a strenuous project. You’ll be moving rock and dirt in a dry, high-altitude environment.

Pack support will be provided by the U.S. Forest Service to carry in tools, group gear, and food to basecamp. However, participants will need to carry their own personal gear and items (see packing list).

SBFC will provide breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks.
